One thing you might want to check for that DVD is if there's a 'video' or 'picture' setting on it from the main menu. I know some of my DVDs are like that as well, and it's because the widescreen movie, for some reason, has the option to be viewed in the 4:3 (full screen) setting, which would do exactly what you're describing. :) Just a suggestion, maybe it'll help.
