Question about Capping

I just recently started using VLC Media Player and when I post icons many times I get complaints that the icons look distorted or stretched. I just read a post about screencapping that says to neer crop jpg caps, which is what Ive been doing...but I was wondering about aspect ratio. I usually hae it set on 16:10 but I was reading that for full screen you should use 4:3 and widescreen 16:9. So...should I not use 16:10 anymore? If anyone can fully explain aspect:ratio.... that would be great!
