Cap quality issues

(mods, feel free to delete this post if it seems irrelevant.)
I compared one of my caps (done with KMPlayer) to the caps of someone else's (I forgot who). Anyway, what I found was that the color was much brighter and more vibrant in the other person's cap than in mine (and it's the same show). I try to set the coloring in the KMPlayer but whenever I do touch it, it goes dark purple with nasty scan line things across the screen. I don't know why.
All I know is that if I don't touch it, I'll be fine.
Moving on, my question is, how do I achieve the best quality cap with vibrant colors and not dull ones?
I'm experimenting with KMPlayer and VLC.
Which program is better to use?
How do you save your caps? Do you save them as .pngs first then convert them? or do you just cap your movies/shows as .jpgs to begin with?
What programs do you guys use? Do you auto-cap? or do you do it manually?
Is there a reason why my caps are sort of dull in color?
