Cap Question (VLC on a Mac)

I recently switched from a PC to a new Macbook and have had to give up my beloved PowerDVD.

I downloaded VLC Player and that works fine for capping downloaded files and stuff at their actual sizes. However, I've been having trouble capping DVDs with it.

I like to cap my DVDs at a high resolution but I can't find a way to actually change the cap size. I change it in the preference window like some of the other tutorials in the memories suggest, but it just continues to cap the DVD at the default size. Can someone please explain to me how I can change this?

Or if someone knows of a free program (or a free trial) that will do this on a Mac, I'm totally open to that as well. I just need a solution to the problem.
